South American Journeys - Amazon Rain Forest - Cuzco - Humanitarian - Community Projects - Iquitos - Amazon Cares - Edu![]() Outreach2007 & 2008 Social Transformation ExpeditionsPeruvian Amazon: This project was developed by Mili Sangama, who along with friends and volunteers felt a deeper need to help the native people in the Amazon Rain forest. Our energetic teams of active volunteers assess the children's schools for renovations and repairs. They work as a collective group to paint classrooms and supply the schools with needed resources. We welcome your participation, and together with the native jungle communities, we can make a difference in the lives of Peruvian children. During the trip, we will arrange meetings and workshops with the communities. Locals and participants will have time to enjoy walks, share ideas, impressions and suggestions. Together, we will participate in daily excursions of bird watching, hiking, fishing, canoeing, camping, and nocturnal boat rides to view the southern constellations. A visit to the Allpahuayo Mishana Reserve is included. Volunteer participants must be team oriented for this mission to succeed. Community projects for 2007: Year round expeditionsAmazon: Group involvement to assist with painting libraries in selected Peruvian villages. Amazon: To assist in the construction of a workshop, for the women of Edu Creaciones Artesanales (Edu Artisans Creations). Amazon: To help with the planting of the Chambira trees (Astrocary tucuma, Mart.) Fam. Palmaceae. From this palm tree, the women at Edu can harvest the material that is necessary to weave their bags and place mats. Amazon: South American Journeys owns 24 acres of land in the rain forest. On this land, we have established a reforestation program. We are in the process of planting 400 Guaba trees (Inga edulis) Fam. Leguminosae. The purpose of this planting project is to help nourish the soil with proper minerals derived from these trees. After the soil is rehabilitated, we will plant native fruit trees, rosewood, and medicinal plants. Each client traveling with South American Journeys becomes an active sponsor of our reforestation program. Cuzco: Group involvement to assist with painting of schools in selected Andean communities. Our groups also assist the community with the planting of medicinal herbs. The herbs are later harvested, then made into creams, oils, teas, and tonics. These items are sold in nearby villages, and the profits sustain community enhancement projects. Amazon Outreach Journeys Cuzco Outreach Journeys Our involvement with the community of Iquitos has expanded to assist in the development of ongoing humanitarian relief. We support Molly Mednikow's Amazon Cares clinic. This local charity conducts an aggressive campaign to permanently reduce the number of homeless and unwanted dogs and cats forced to survive on the streets of Iquitos. Molly uses humane and sustainable methods to control animal overpopulation, administer rabies vaccines, and also to educate the people about the importance of animal welfare. South American Journeys is also committed to supporting Caritas in their Iquitos orphanage. Compassionate volunteers are always welcome to assist. In exchange for your needed services, Caritas will arrange accommodations for you to stay with a local family. - Mili Sangama |
